Wherein Landen Gets Evacuated from Puerto Rico.

September 27, 2017

Hey y'all. We made it safe. It was a long day of travel and we just got to the mission home here in Riverside California. So far people have been super nice. We got here to a bunch of donations that people had given us. I'll tell you about the crazyness of this basically whole transfer, or I might just send you pics of my journal entries cause I'm super vago, we'll see, on Monday for p-day.

Les amo todo un monton,
Hasta lunes,
Elder Bailey

Dear Brother and Sister Bailey                        September 30, 2017

President Hammon and I feel so blessed to be able to serve with your son Elder Bailey in the California Riverside Mission. It was wonderful meeting him and the other missionaries from the San Juan Puerto Rico Mission at the airport and spending time with him prior to assigning him. Your missionary seems in very good spirits and has now been assigned to a companion and is out serving.
We did take the missionaries shopping, but these young men were so humble that they did not ask for much. If your missionary contacts you about needing missionary items, please contact us. We had several local members who made donations that will allow them to purchases what they need.

May God bless you and your family!

President and Sister Hammon

Wherein Maelynn Lives Through the QUAKE!

September 25, 2017

Basically this has been the strangest week of my life!

Tuesday we had just walked out of a lesson, and I stopped to ask how much a couple of bananas would cost, then the lady starting getting all weird and said "¿esta temblando? ¡ESTA TEMBLANDO! ¡ESTA TEMBLANDO!" (Is it shaking? It's shaking! IT'S SHAKING!!)
....and then she started praying with her hands in the air "Perdonanos Jesus!" (Please forgive us Jesus!)...so me and my comp walked out into the street.

Honestly before the lady said anything, me and my comp both just thought that a really big truck was passing by or something. That's what it sounded like and felt like at first. We just stood in the middle of the street shaking for a little while, then all of a sudden it hit super hard, EVERYTHING wasn't just waving side to side, but moving dramatically!

I don't really know how to describe it, its a force that I had never felt before... but despite the fact that the whole earth was moving right below our feet, I didn't feel any sense of fear at all. And after it stopped I was just worried about the people in areas where it must have hit harder. I think one of the worst parts is that the earthquake knocked out all forms of communication. There was no internet, no cell service, not even light for several hours, and in some areas lasted til the next day.

From what people have told us, there was a ton of damage in the center of Cuernavaca, a big bell tower fell, a 4 story building collapsed on top of a public transport bus full of people, and other buildings collapsed!  We communicated with our leaders that we were OK and we kept working. Wednesday we left our house at like 6:45 am to go on divisions with our sister training leaders in an area called Alpuyeca. Basically all day with them we kept getting updates from the zone leaders telling us we needed to tell our families we were OK, and to go buy food and make an emergency backpack.

...and we needed to check our house to make sure it was safe and send a report to the mission presidents wife, and other safety and preparedness stuff, buuuut we couldn't really do that because we weren't in our area. For part of the day I was on splits with Hermana Shook, and we went to a pueblo called...I don't remember, but a tiny pueblo that got pretty beat up. There were lots of houses collapsed, the main Catholic church literally "deflated like bread dough" as a member that witnessed it described it to us.  In fact almost all of the Catholic churches in this whole area had at least part of it fall. ;(

Wednesday night some other sisters had to come stay with us because their house had some nasty cracks in it. Thursday we woke up and got ready to go back to Cuernavaca because we had interviews with the mission president.  But before we left, the other sisters got a call telling them to cancel their plans because they were going to be doing service all day.  So we left their house pretty bummed that we had to go to interviews instead of doing service, but like 10 minutes down the road the sisters called us and said "Hey come back, we're all going to go do service!"  Woohoo, so we headed back.

ALL of the missionaries in the Cuernavaca Zone and ALL the missionaries in this other zone where we were doing service (called Galeana) were there.  Approx. 34 missionaries and president and his wife. All the Elders and men went to a place called Jojutla that pretty much got demolished

The bishop's house there is literally dust... They helped with the heavy lifting stuff, and all the sisters stayed back in the stake center making care packages of sorts, with the essentials, toilet paper, canned veggies and tuna, crackers, soap, soup, diapers. and sorting through and making packages of clothing as well.

We were there all day and made it back to our house about 9:00 that night, when we found a few cracks on the upper level of our house, but nothing too worrisome.

The Hermanas that were serving in Jojutla got pulled out and put in another area. As far as I know, all the missionaries are fine.  Several members have made comments to us like "of course nothing happened to you two -  you're serving in the work of the Lord." or "You're missionaries, you're basically immortal!"   Haha so mom, you have nothing to worry about :)

We're back to our regular schedule, but it still feels just a little off.  Everyone's honestly just super shaken up (no pun intended). 32 years ago on the very same day, September 19, there was a devastating earthquake in Mexico City that killed tons of people. They say that the earthquake of 1985 is to them what the terrorist attack of 9/11 is to us.  So to have it happen AGAIN on the very same day, is a little freaky, and everyone I've talked to that experienced the quake in 1985 say that they felt this one lots stronger! Poor Morelos has never experienced anything like this.

But it's been interesting talking to people about how they felt and what they were thinking about when the world started shaking...And almost every single person says that they immediately thought about their kids or their wife or their mom. Even to people that don't have the gospel in their lives, family is what matters most.  And I'm just glad that we have the gospel in our lives and that we know that our family is eternal.

Keep sending a few of your prayers down here, as well as over to Puerto Rico.  I can't imagine how bad it must be if they're literally pulling all of the missionaries out. ;(  That's got to be quite the change for Landen.
--How did you guys get so lucky to have 2 missionaries in crazy parts of the world at the same time?
Love,
Hermana Bailey

Wherein Landen Awaits ANOTHER Hurricane (Maria)!

August 19, 2017

I literally have like 10 minutes to write because they are evacuating us, so if anyone wrote me and I didn't write them back, let them know why and tell them I'm sorry.

Yes, another huracan is coming. It's suposed to hit us a lot harder this time.  Last time we only had winds like 50 miles per hour, now we are expecting 150+ miles per hour - so we are screwed.

So help me if you guys kill my dog before I get home I will lasso this hurricane and ride it to Idaho to save her.

Don't worry about anything here though, we're safe. It might be a while before I can write again, pero sepan q les amo un monton a todos ustedes y q todo esto va a pasar pa el mejor. Es un gran adventura q voy a contar a uds despues de todo esta rebalu,.

I love you guys all soooooooo much!!!!!!!!!!!!

Landen :)

Wherein Maelynn Catches a Butterfly!

September 18, 2017

So the most exciting thing that happened this week is that I caught a butterfly!!!

jk...

...The most exciting thing was obviously experiencing my first 15 de Septiembre in Mexico! (Mexican Independence Day)
Pretty sure I  was more pumped than my Mexican comp, but it's watevs....
It was a little different, because, believe it or not, I'm not actually from Mexico!  But super cool to be a part of the celebrations, and eat the tacos, and watch the dances, and eat the tacos, and participate in the grito, when someone waving the flag and yells"¡Viva Mexico!" and we all yell back: "¡VIVA!"
At the 15th of September Celebrations!

My cute girl Maelynn with some adorable little girls in Cuernavaca!

a servieta that an investigator made me!
¡Viva México!

WAY excited for General Conference coming up! what what.
Can't believe another 6 months have passed by!
Love,
Maelynn

Wherein Landen meets Hurricane Irma!

September 11th, 2017:

"Thanks Dad. Sorry I didn't write last week, literally the whole Island shut down and boarded up for the Huracan and we couldn't get to computers.  That is so cool about Miles' baptism, y me encanta los testimonios de los abuelos. So true. Please send my saludos y amor a Miles. Love you!
Elder Bailey"

Dear Family,

"This week was a little crazy.  We were supposed to have transfers this last week on Tuesday, but they wouldn't let the new greenies fly out of the Dominican Republic with this crazy hurricane. So we've been in a trio this whole week, (because Elder Mancilla went to Dominica last Saturday) so yes.... I've been stuck in a trio with two people who don't speak English for over the last week!

Tuesday at 5 they ordered us to be in our house, and they didn't let us leave until Thursday at 1.  So we were indoors for 44 straight hours!!  (I think I slept for like 23 of those hours). Puerto Rico was spared a lot of damage. They told us that Irma turned at the last second and went towards Florida. We still got the fastest rain and wind that I've ever seen... but the eye of the hurricane never actually hit Puerto Rico.

Thursday we went out in our service clothes to help people.  For the most part, houses sustained not too much damage.  But the storm dropped a lot of trees and flooded quite a bit.  But I feel like we were spared a lot.

We worked normal days on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. And today these transfers are going to happen.  I'm getting a new companion.  His name is Elder Banda.  He's from Panama, and only has poco time left in the mission so I'll prolly be his last companion.

I didn't know Maelynn got hit by a earthquake, hope all is good there.

Oh mom - tell that shoe guy friend of yours that the boots he recommended me to get did a good job and they kept my feet dryer than most all of the other missionaries!  But even they couldn't keep out the wrath of Irma!

This is a video of us walking down the main carreterra to our house!
(Sorry, the video wouldn't go through, but we were walking in like 10 inches of water!)

Love you all,
Elder Bailey

Wherein Maelynn Sleeps through an Earthquake!

Friday September 8, 2017

"Our President gave everyone permission to write our families so that you aren't freaking out. So there was an earthquake last night at like midnight. To be totally honest, we kind of just pass out hard every night, and yeah we didn't feel a thing. The only reason we knew about it was because members called to check on us. Supposedly the strongest earthquake Mexico has experienced in over a hundred years...and I slept through it! How sad. But apparently everyone else here felt it and they were pretty freaked out. That's all anyone's been talking about today, but all is well :) Bummer that I slept through it though for reals."

Monday September 11, 2017

"Not much damage here from the earthquake, but LOTS in other areas like Chiapas and Oaxaca. A family member of a member in our ward was just here visiting like 2 weeks ago from Oaxaca.  Well this weekend she got into contact with our bishop and asked him for help. Basically everything was destroyed down there. The church down there is full of people and overflowing - to the point that people are just sleeping outside. Well after the second quake (an aftershock I think) she said it started to pour. So there were hungry people with NOTHING, sleeping outside in the rain.

This sister asked our bishop to get together with some brethren from the ward and use their priesthood to calm the storm.
I don't really know how they did it, but hours later she responded that the rain had stopped.
All day yesterday and today our stake has been gathering clothes and food and things as simple as toilet paper to send down to them. We went to the church today to help them collect things, and it's incredible how people pull together to help people that they don't even know!

A sister here in my ward was talking to me yesterday and she made the comment that she felt like we were living like queens here compared to the people in Oaxaca.
....And then thinking about the difference of living here and living in the States.... honestly guys, just realize how much we have!  Don't let a single day pass by without being grateful that you have a water-proof house, more than just hard tortillas to eat, and toilets that flush!

So glad to hear that Landen survived! We've been praying for you and the people in Puerto Rico. The world is getting crazier and crazier!

Wanna hear something super rad? Remember Hermana Shook? My mama down here? Well she just got made a sister training leader, but not just any sister training leader, MY sister training leader! woo hoo!

I want to introduce you to 2 of our investigators.
Cecilio. We encountered him on the bus one day, about a month ago. And after the first time we visited him, he came to church! And he hasn't missed a Sunday since!  He even went with the Elders Quorum to a service project last week!  He should be getting baptized in the coming weeks (he's close to getting rid of the alcohol)!!

Julio. He has been in enseñanza (lessons) the whole time I've been in this area. And he's had more baptism dates than I can count.  Last Sunday he told us that he wanted to wait until he knew more about the Book or Mormon, so we told him to keep reading the Book of Mormon and to pick a date and let us know.  But he never let us know.  Then this Sunday he didn't come, so we called him to see what happened.  He told us that he had an answer for us: he's gonna get baptized! He just feel embarrassed to walk up alone in front of everyone to go get the Holy Ghost. Minor problem. Super Pumped - lots of time working with this young man!

Sending my love and prayers,
Hermana Bailey

Wherein Maelynn Hates on Satan!

September 4, 2017

Congrats on your baptism, Miles!

Congrats Grandma and Grandpa - 60 years of marriage! They say the first 50 are the difficult ones, so now all is easy breezy, no?

I don't have any sort of fun stories this week. But we had a little meeting with the bishop this weekend after a rather rough ward council, and we talked about how there are 3 times in one's life that Satan attacks more than ever.

1: when someone's preparing to serve a mission.
2: when someone's getting ready to be sealed in the temple.
3: when someone's preparing to be baptized.

Well of course he's going to be working hard, these are times when people are going to be making important covenants with God, or going to help others make these covenants. In the mission I have seen how he works when people are trying to change their lives and come closer to God by being baptized. Oh how frustrating he is!  People feel the spirit, start making changes, and then something happens in their family, or they all of a sudden "decide that they want to stay in their religion" (even though they haven't been to church in years), or they just feel like they don't know enough after 4 months in enseñanza.

Honestly, hes just so annoying! I hope that when we have feelings like this: "that we're not good enough, we don't know enough, that maybe the church just isn't for me", that we can realize where these thoughts are coming from, and say as the Savior did, "Get thee hence, Satan."

And I know we can do this as we come to know and trust in the Lord. because "if God be for us, who can be against us?"
Love,
Hermana Bailey

Wherein Landen Prepares for a Hurricane!

Sept. 4, 2017

We did not get any emails from Landen today, but we received two emails from Landen's Mission President this week:

Friday, September 01, 2017

Dear Parents,
We have received a bulletin from Church Security informing us of the storm that is building in the Atlantic and it's potential to strengthen and cross our Mission next week. We have an emergency plan in place which will ensure that the missionaries are prepared and out of harms way.  As further developments occur we will keep you updated.

Sincerely,
President Smart

Update on Missionaries in the Puerto Rico San Juan Mission:

The storm appears to be heading for Puerto Rico and should arrive Wednesday, September 6 or Thursday, September 7th. We have communicated with all missionaries and have confirmed that they have food and water for the storm. We will continue to monitor the conditions in order to ensure that they are out of harm’s way. We are confident that they are prepared to weather the storm.
